Energy Saving Measures

Controls
Buildings that are too hot, cold, draughty, dull or bright are generally inefficient and cost more to keep operational than well designed equivalents. One of the most cost effective methods of saving energy is to ensure that existing controls are being used optimally.

Common controls problems include:

  • Systems default setting not set up appropriately
  • Sensors not calibrated, defective or positioned incorrectly
  • No or inadequate zoning
  • Interfaces that are not intuitive

Complex controls interfaces are rarely used correctly. Our priority when installing controls is to opt for hi-tech,  user friendly solutions. The Building Controls Industry Association states that better performing systems are not necessarily expensive but that they tend to receive careful attention to detail in briefing, design, specification, installation and commissioning (Controls for end users, BCIA, 2007).

Heating and hot water
Heating and hot water combined, accounts for half of an average company’s annual energy bill. Regular servicing of gas and oil fired boilers removes the soot and ash that can reduce the efficiency of heat transfer within the boiler and increase the efficiency by as much as 15-20% (source: Gutierrez &. D’Ascenzo, 2007).

Replacing boilers with modern efficient boilers can save 35% when compared to boilers that are 10 years or older.

Variable Speed Drives
Variable speed drives and soft start technology can reduce the energy consumed by pumps and motors within a building services installation, with an average payback period of 12- 18 months. Government advisors, McKinsey & Co report that variable speed drives will increase in their usage by 40% by 2040, and creating a 35% energy saving.

Voltage Optimisation
Some equipment will function without any loss of performance with a reduced voltage supply. In this scenario our customers can typically save between 5-10% of their energy consumption by introducing voltage optimisation equipment. In addition to this there is often an added advantage of increasing life expectancy of plant and equipment with repayment of capital cost often achieved in less that 18 months.
